In a recent flurry of Firefox updates on BeBits, new builds have been released for Zeta, BONE, and net_server. In addition to performance and stability improvements, the new build(s) introduce support for mice with horizontal scroll-wheels/buttons. I’ve been using the new BONE build for a few days now and it does indeed feel a bit snappier/faster than the previous build. The improvements are most noticeable on complex/poorly-coded pages that would previously cause BeOS Firefox to become unresponsive and use 100% CPU for a few seconds before displaying.
First reported by Kian Duffy at HaikuNews, a BeOS GUI is for the Transmission BitTorrent client is in being worked on by Bryan Varner. In recent posts on his blog, he showed off a screenshot and detailed some of his adventures in caffeine withdrawal. While there is the BeThon-based BitTorrent for BeOS client, it is increasingly-incompatible with newer torrent files – a GUI client based on Transmission could potentially give us BitTorrent support on par with the mainstream OSes. Update: For those who are curious about what became of Bryan’s previous in-developmebt BT client (Tidalwave), a comment on his blog mentions that the code was lost in a harddrive failure.
In a nipple-hardening exclusive report, BeDoper News has revealed the details of the new OS venture founded by former Be Inc. CEO Jean-Louis Gassee (also known as “the 100% organic JLG quote generator”). While details are scarce at this time, JLG has already hired an employee whose qualifications reportedly include being “real hackerly.”
yellowTab announced on Wednesday that they are working on porting the OpenOffice.org suite to the Zeta OS. First reported by IsComputerOn and OSNews, the announcement mentions that work is progressing quickly and yellowTab has already ported 40 of the approximately 200 modules that make up the Open Source office suite. They plan to submit their changes for inclusion in the OpenOffice.org source tree, making the code available for Haiku/BeOS developers. While Gobe Productive is a much nicer program to use, it’s getting a bit long in the tooth – especially in terms of its support for MS Office file formats. Having a modern, Microsoft-compatible office suite makes good business sense for yellowTab, and for users it means one more thing we don’t need another OS for. And anyone who can look at the OpenOffice.org dependency map for more than ten seconds without getting dizzy is truly deserving of respect.
