As read on the CVS commit mailing list and in the news section of HaikuWare, a brand new usb_disk driver has been added to the source code repository.

Altough not yet added to the VMware image, that driver “should be able to support USB mass storage devices of the bulk-only class using transparent SCSI commands (i.e. most of the current external harddrives and flash media)”. There a still issues with hot-(un)plugging but in the end this piece of code should “allow to boot Haiku
from USB media like memory sticks or external harddrives”
.

Great news !

Haiku the media OS
Manette.be - April 1st, 2008

It seems big companies begin to have an interested look at Haiku nowadays.

As reported by ultrabill on BeOSfrance the famous Cyberlink company began porting PowerDVD to Haiku. The screenshot shown below is the alpha 1 version still under development.

It is probably the ability of the OS to easily manage video and sound that interested Cyberlink. For the moment there is no Blu-ray support because no translator is available for H264 and VC-1 codecs and because Java for Haiku is still under development too (will lead to missing functionalities on some movies).

Let’s hope this will make more companies to have a closer look at Haiku.

Three topics for this second edition:

  • progress on including the developer tools;
  • the problematic of whether or not to release a bootable CD Haiku distribution;
  • statistics about the milestone for alpha 1.

Read the whole story over here.

Sorry the site has broken but at the same time it was nice to me to see the old-time BeGroovy layout revived.

Hope you’ll be able to fix the problems without too many efforts…

Over on HaikuWare, Karl vom Dorff has posted the list of nominees for their “April 1st TYA” (Thank You Award) – the most prestigious honour since the Annual (*cough*) BeDoper Masters Awards. As the name suggest, the contest is meant to recognize people / groups of people who have made important contributions to Haiku.

The nominees are (drumrolldrumrolldrumroll):

– jan__64

– Bernd Korz

– Jorge A. Mare

– Francois Revol (mmu_man)

– The Bezilla team

The contest is being held as a poll and the winner will receive $50 cash – but, as tqh has pointed out on the BeZilla blog, “the nomination is an award in itself”.

Cast your vote here: http://www.haikuware.com/poll/
