NetSurf Binary Available for Download

Back in June, Manette posted a news item mentioning François “mmu_man” Revol’s efforts to port the NetSurf browser to the BeOSes (yes, I’ve become too lazy to type “Haiku / BeOS / ZETA” anymore). Those efforts have borne fruit already: IsComputerOn recently reported that François has made a binary copy available for download.

I had a chance to give it a try on R5 and it seems to work quite nicely – the screenshot above shows NetSurf displaying BeOSNews.com (and doing a pretty decent job). In the comments over on ICO, François mentioned that libz.so must be installed – it isn’t included in R5 by default, but it is included in the LibPak available on BeBits. If you take NetSurf for a spin, keep in mind that the “netsurf” folder must be located in /boot/apps/ (otherwise you’ll see an error when trying to run the binary).

Old Apps, New Download Links

A little while ago, I posted a desperate plea request for three older apps that I had lost (after my hard drive crash last fall) – Dockbert, FWorkspaces, and UniversalScroller (version 1.8). The response exceeded my hopes and, within a week, helpful members of the BeOS community had sent me all 3 apps.

Along with the request, I had also promised to mirror the downloads on BeOSNews in the hopes of saving others from the frustration of wading through dead links on BeBits. I finally got around to fulfilling that promise and I’ve added I’ve added “additional location” links to the appropriate BeBits pages:

VoIP back to our platform ?

Oliver Ruiz Dorantes posted an interesting piece of information on his blog today.

Back in the time Oliver worked on a the creation of a VoIP application for yT’s Zeta as his final studies project. The application was named Whisper and was based on the BeNet source code.

Today, Oliver seems to have obtained from Bernd Korz the rights to publish his thesis documentation. He hopes it will ease the re-creation of such an application from BeNet source code.

Whisper was using a proprietary point-to-point protocol but what if it could be extended to other standards as well…

• Rudolf Cornelissen is committing code again, this time directly into the Haiku repository. His work seems related to nVidia cards at the moment.
• Haikuware 1st June Thank You Award is attributed to Michael mmlr Lotz. Congrats !
• Haikuware launched two new bounties: one related to documentation, the other for bringing flash abilities to the Haiku.
• since rev25750 Haiku successfully boots on the eeePC. Although Haiku runs for the moment in “reduced” graphic mode (640×480 stretched in 800×480) and lacks drivers for network WiFi and sound this is a great achievement ! (more info here, qua & ici)
• DarkWyrm tells us he is working on a revision of the Haiku R2 Desktop document which will be posted as soon as finished.
• zeVenOS beta 5 is out.
• GSOC student Dustin Howett posted a status update about adding support for High Precision Event Timers (HPET) in Haiku.

• The Haiku Code Drive 2008 has raised more than $7500 ! This is a great encouragement received from the Community ! Haiku inc. added the missing money to reach the $10’000 mark allowing four more students to work on Haiku during the Summer holidays (with the 5 GSOC students it makes 9, one more than in 2008).
