ZBackup_server announced
Stephen B. - February 10th, 2006

As reported by Studio-33, Florian Thaler has written a new companion application to ZBackup called ZBackup Server. As the name implies, it’s a server, (in the BeOS sense, a la the media_server or the input_server) which can automatically perform scheduled backups. The ZBackup application itself has also been updated with the ability to configure an automatic backup schedule (screenshot).

The post on Thorian’s blog mentions that he’s looking for beta testers – so head over and contact him if you’re interested in giving the ZBackup_server a whirl.

Over on OSNews, David Courtney has written a review of YellowTAB’s latest release, ZETA 1.1. The review gives ZETA high marks for ease of installation, speed, userfriendliness and the thorough integration of Workspaces; the reviewer found fault, however, with the outdated nature of some of the included software and the incomplete support for newer hardware devices (such as USB headsets). The overall conclusion arrived at is that ZETA has some nice potential, but needs more work to be suitable for users who aren’t geeks/OS enthusiasts. It’s a pretty fair article overall and more thorough than most of the reviews written of ZETA by those who aren’t long-time BeOS users.

Over on ZetaNews, the_leander has the scoop on some recent developments in regards to BeOS WiFi support. Developer Patrick Lafarguette has updated his three existing WiFi chipset drivers and has added drivers for two more chipsets. The list of supported chipsets now includes: 3c920, 3c940, hfa384x, rt25xx, and wm3b2200bg. The drivers appear to be written specifically for BeOS, but several of the drivers are listed as working with ZETA as well. Impressive work, Patrick! I’m beginning to think that BeOS developers belong to a race of superhumans genetically-engineered to code without requiring sleep.

Note to self: proofread update first, then post it – not vice-versa.

Reader Tako “0033” Lansbergen wrote in to let me know that he’s started a new BeOS news site, Studio-33. Although the site has only been up since December, it’s seen frequent updates and already has an impressive amount of content. He’s also posted a review/examination of the new ZBackup application, which is an interesting read for anyone curious about the program.

Mr. X recently sent in some details from an EMail conversation with Rudolf Cornelissen about what he’s up to these days. Right now he’s focusing on support for systems with multiple video cards:

Currently I am working hard on improving support for multiple cards in one system, and one test I did (is running even now :), is having Q2 running on a secondary card, while the Desktop is on the primary card (although filled with empty q2 generated rectangles because setting modes is incorporated there.

Rudolf also outlined some of the other things he’s currently working on, read more for the details!

I have to fix a few more things, then I’ll release:
-new 2d drivers for matrox, nvidia, neomagic
-3d driver recompile for nvidia (still looking to see if I can find more HW speed optimisations)
-VGA device video consumer node which will display video on a secondary supported card
-MK mediaplayer: a mediaplayer (simple) that uses a node to playback video: even Be’s mediaplayer doesn’t do that)

Currently I have tested on three systems: all working with nodes. One of them has 5 gfx cards in it, I can select one of the four not used cards and video will go there. :-)

This secondary 3D and video thing means that I can also do this: (right now)
– primary card displays desktop (with recompiled 3D apps that is, which I don’t have right now though)
– secondary card displays video
– tertiary card plays Q2.

The recent stream of new applications and application updates shows no signs of drying up – and now Oliver Tappe has joined the party by releasing an update to the Beam EMail client (downloads for net_server, BONE, and ZETA). The update, a Release Candidate for version 1.1, appears to contain all the new features added specifically for the Zeta version. And after digging through RC1.1 for a few minutes, a few other interesting things also popped out, such as built-in trainable spam filtering (including a “Train as tofu” option?), and incremental search – aka “find as you type” – in message windows. ICO and HaikuNews have both posted additional details.

Another piece of software which was recently updated is Nvu, the mozilla-based WYSIWYG HTML editor. A screenshot of Nvu running on R5 + BONE can be seen here: screenshot. And last but not least, developer Florian Thaler has released a backup utility for ZETA called ZBackup. From the screenshots, it looks like a lot of effort has been making backup of important data as simple as possible, and it offers some useful options for storing backups (CD/DVD, FTP, etc).

Thanks to Mr. X for the last two items.

In the opening salvo of what is hoped to be a long and protracted war, BeDoper has written a particularly nasty and scathing piece about the reticent ELQ, and his abject refusal to play nice. There’s also a bit about what Chris Simmons of Haiku News is up to lately.

In other news, all other BeOS sites have been SCOOPED. I hated to do it to them, but I haven’t contributed here in a while.
