Three topics for this second edition:

  • progress on including the developer tools;
  • the problematic of whether or not to release a bootable CD Haiku distribution;
  • statistics about the milestone for alpha 1.

Sorry the site has broken but at the same time it was nice to me to see the old-time BeGroovy layout revived.

Hope you’ll be able to fix the problems without too many efforts…

Over on HaikuWare, Karl vom Dorff has posted the list of nominees for their “April 1st TYA” (Thank You Award) – the most prestigious honour since the Annual (*cough*) BeDoper Masters Awards. As the name suggest, the contest is meant to recognize people / groups of people who have made important contributions to Haiku.

The nominees are (drumrolldrumrolldrumroll):

– jan__64

– Bernd Korz

– Jorge A. Mare

– Francois Revol (mmu_man)

– The Bezilla team

The contest is being held as a poll and the winner will receive $50 cash – but, as tqh has pointed out on the BeZilla blog, “the nomination is an award in itself”.

There was a nice surprise among recent BeBits updates: Oliver Tappe has released an updated version of the mail client BEAM. The list of changes contains mainly bug fixes along with a few new features – if the length of the list is any indication, Oliver has done a large amount of work on BEAM recently.

Right above BEAM in the “New Software” list there is another unexpected treat: an update the the 3ivx video codec. Most significantly, the update contains specific support for Haiku and experimental support for decoding AAC audio (the BeOS version of 3ivx previously didn’t come with an audio decoder). While 3ivx files aren’t very common, the 3ivx decoder can also be used to decode other types of mp4 video (DivX, Xvid, etc). And if WikiPedia is to be believed, this makes 3ivx Technologies Ltd. the first commercial vendor to support Haiku.

Mmmmm… what about reading an eight pages long article that includes a full interview of Axel Dörfler, as well as comments from Bryan Varner (Haiku Java Port team lead) and Dane Scott, of TuneTracker fame ?

Koki (Jorge G. Mare) inform us today that the Japanese magazine Software Design will publish that article in its April edition but, lucky us, it is already available in english at this location. Enjoy !

Haiku’s guy Niels Sascha Reedijk posted yesterday a status update on the achievements realized in the process of reaching the alpha 1 state. He explains he think this is a good thing to have from time to time updates on this topics for two reasons. The first, to show off the enormous amount of work done in Haiku, the second, to put everyone behind a common goal.

Three topics discussed:

  1. achievements realized for being able to distribute alpha 1 as a LiveCD;
  2. the self-hosting problem and what has been done in the goal to be able to develop and compile haiku from within haiku;
  3. the follow-up of the tickets to be resolved to get to the alpha 1 milestone.

Go ahead and read the detailed information at haiku-os.org.
